Monday To begin the lecture we were given one minute to independently list words associated with 'Politics'. I conjured society, decision making, leadership, corruption, power, wealth, democracy. The content of the lecture itself does not affect my work, nor does my work reflect upon the issues and content of the lecture, however, I still found it to be useful. I would really like to produce work which is influenced by politics, social status/sociology, but unfortunately I won't have time to educate myself on current affairs and further research and continue my current practise. I made notes to research Cornelius Cardew, Jenny Holzer, Primary/Secondary Signification, Social Realism, Seattle Riots. I've made a mistake of noting these name/terms down without any reference. I will in the near future spend some time researching these. After the lecture, Theo kept behind anybody that was scheduled to be part of Tuesday's seminar. We were presented with a selection of (roughly 8) varied A4 images, asked to pick one and then research it's history and significance in preparation for the morning. I chose 'Woodcraft Folk badge'. Tuesday 4th: Today was the first seminar that I'd registered for, 'Artist as Revolutionary'. My notes for the seminar can be found below: I had selected Woodcraft Folk in the (rather sadistic) mindset that there would be something of a cult or devious history. Evidently, this was not the case, and they were more of a breakaway group from the traditional, more religious Scout Association. With the levels of discussion and participation at a high, we ran out of time to cover all the different images. At 4:15pm I was scheduled to meet with Lois for Pastoral/Individual Tutorial. I was in my workspace already experimenting with several pieces, as well as trying to keep on top of organising the large quantity of book pages I'd already torn out / cut up. Pastoral Tutorial Through today's tutorial with Lois, it was suggested that I research artists Jeff Walls, Andreas Gursky and Nigel Cook. I floated the idea of the 'lone figure' to Lois. "The Lone Figure" The concept behind The Lone Figure, is borderline concept, borderline personal experience. With the large, portrait-landscape remapping collage I've been making, there is a running theme of a solitary figure in the foreground. Although the terrain and aesthetics of the collages change throughout, there is a continual similarity with The Lone Figure. This lone figure is very close to my feelings towards family and friends. A constant search for a connection on a human level. For varying reasons, I have always struggled to maintain relationships, friendships and connections with family members. The Lone Figure is wandering, searching the land, oblivious to the beauty of their surroundings, entirely focused on the pursuit of belonging.
