Monday The lecture ‘Artist as Global Citizen’ was postponed. I decided to use the week to embark on something I’ve been considering for a while. I wanted to produce collages, and return them in to book form. The difficulty with this, is how to negotiate creating a book. I chose the earliest magazine I had in my collection to source the images. *As a side note – National Geographic have an incredibly frustrating way of stapling the magazines together. It’s very difficult to remove the staples without damaging the pages as they’re pressed through the top/front page, straight through and out the back page as can be seen in image below: Once the pages were separated and the images were compiled, I considered my options for producing a book or magazine type object. I considered a classic (double-page which is folded in half and stapled down the centre spine) approach, but this wouldn’t offer any distinction between the outside of the object and the inner pages. What I imagined would have a hard cover to protect. I also didn’t want to start considering front covers and back page blurbs. I want something which is very plain on the outside, which could be confused with a notebook at a glance. I used a blank A5 sketchbook purchased earlier in the year to be the basis of the project. The immediate problem is the fine margin between the pages. I needed to remove some pages in the book to allow for the paper which is going to go in to it. If going to plan, the existing blank pages will effectively double or triple in thickness due to pages being back-to-back. I carefully removed pairings of pages from the book to leave me with a much-reduced book. Tuesday To coincide with with the postponed lecture (Artist as Global Citizen), the related seminar was too rearranged for early next year. The Group Tutorial was 2pm was also cancelled so the morning and early afternoon was an opportunity to focus on the collage book. I managed to start on the first two pages. I would have had three, but I made an almighty mess of an Air France collage, but managed to photograph how it would have looked had I not ruined it beyond salvation (below): Wednesday The timetabled ‘Images that say what you want them to say’ lecture didn’t take place. Not sure why, perhaps a printing error. I continued working on the collage book. Still trying to keep with the theme of confusing the images, questioning their purpose (whether they’re artistic/abstract/advertisements). I finished the day with an additional four pages:
